USLHS Passport Membership
We welcome all of you who have recently joined the Society as a Passport member or higher
level. For stamp collectors the benefits are numerous and well worth the yearly membership
fee. You should have already received the 2022 & 2023 Passport Club and Society
Membership stamps. In addition, all USLHS members receive:
Access to the detailed (password protected) list of participating lighthouses. You should
have received the current password recently. If not, be sure and call the office.
Holiday ornament stamp and achievement award patches at no charge.
An email subscription to the current Stamp Flashes newsletter providing updated
information about everything related to the passport program.
50% discount on the Lost Light Series stamps, previous holiday stamps and any future
stamps issued by the Society. Note: Stamps created for USLHS tours are only available to
tour participants.
Passport Membership versus Passport Club
The difference between the old Passport Club and the new Passport membership is as follows:
Passport Membership: This entry level of Society membership is designed specifically for
those primarily interested in the Passport Stamp Program. Benefits are enumerated above.
Higher levels of membership (e.g. Keeper, Prism) have additional benefits, including the
Society’s publication, The Keepers Log. All Society members are entitled to the same benefits
as Passport members. For a description of all of the membership levels visit:
https://uslhs.org/membership/join-renew.
Passport Club: These individuals joined the original free club which now is being phased out.
These non-Society members can still participate in the passport stamp collection program,
submit their completed books for awards (for a fee) and be listed in the Hall of Fame. They will
not have access to the detailed list of participating locations or the current issue of the Stamp
Flashes newsletter.
Passport Achievement Awards Submissions - Update
We are now only accepting submissions for awards electronically. Scan or
take photos of your Passport pages and send them in an email for verification to
passportcl[email protected]. Do not mail the Passport or scanned pages to the
Society office. Once verified, Society members will receive their patch and a certificate of
completion. Non-Society members will be provided information as to where they can purchase
their award patches. Remember, in order to obtain your awards and be listed in the Hall of
Fame your Passport must contain 60 acceptable entries. For a list of what is acceptable
please visit the programs goals and guidelines web page:
https://uslhs.org/fun/passport-club/guidelines.
Passport Stamp Locations: Two Listings
Summary List of All Participating Lighthouses (no password required): Identifies all locations
(lighthouses, museums, life-saving stations, etc.) that have at least one stamp. Fresnel lenses
are listed only if they are not located at the lighthouse (e.g. museum). This is a good check list
if you want to keep track of places for which you have a stamp. It does not indicate where,
when or how the stamp is available.
Detailed List of Participating Locations (Member only - password required): Provides
information about where stamps are available and contact information. In addition to
lighthouses, this includes commercial cruise companies, retail outlets, visitor’s centers,
museums and other non-lighthouse locations. If a mail option is offered, details about how and
where to obtain the stamps are given. Be sure to use the correct mailing address which is
often different from the address of the lighthouse or museum.
Updating the Stamp Listings
Beginning early in the spring, our regional volunteer stamp representatives contact each stamp
location to verify that their listing information is correct. Depending on the geographical
location and availability of lighthouse staff, this process takes several months. We try our best
to have it completed by Memorial Day. After that we encourage you to send us an email if you
have new information about a listing. It will be forwarded to the appropriate representative for
follow-up. Remember that if someone tells you that the stamp is not available; ask around
before concluding that our information is not correct. Unlike most NPS cancellation stamps,
our stamps are not chained to a counter so they often get moved. The dedicated USLHS
volunteers doing the heavy lifting for the stamp program are:
Marge Czop (Michigan)
Yvette Dills (Southeast)
Nicole Grashik (Michigan)
Judy Grigg (Michigan & West Coast)
Wanda Mayo (South)
Sharon Mills (Northeast)
Sue Moffit (Midwest)
Andy Robinson (West Coast)
Scott & Diane Walbert (Northeast)
Marion Zabot (East Coast)
Only with the help of these volunteers can Passport Program continue to be a fun and
educational aspect of lighthouse adventures.
New Stamp Information
Detroit Area Lighthouses
Three new stamps for lighthouses in the Detroit area are now available with the proceeds
going to preservation efforts of the Save Our South Channel Lights Organization. These
stamps are currently only available by mail. Send your request to [email protected]. You will
be provided with mailing instructions. Be sure to include a $2 donation for each stamp
requested.
Lake St. Clair Light - Located in the middle of Lake St. Clair this light, first lit in 1941,
replaced a series of lightships that were positioned there beginning in 1878.
William Livingston Memorial Lighthouse - This light was built with funds provided
by the Lake Carriers’ Association as a memorial to William Livingston (1844-1925)
who served as its president from 1902 until his death in 1925. It is unique in that it
is the only marble lighthouse in the United States.
Windmill Point Light - The original Windmill Point Light was built in 1838 at the
Detroit River entrance from Lake St. Clair. The current steel plated tower is on a
short steel pier projecting into the river and is a very popular fishing spot.
Point Bolivar, Texas
The current cast iron Point Bolivar Lighthouse tower was first lit in 1872. 2022 marked
the lighthouse’s 150
th
year anniversary. The Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation now
has an anniversary stamp to go with their original lighthouse stamp. See their listing
for information on how to obtain this new stamp.
Kewaunee Pier Lighthouse, Wisconsin
Kewaunee Pier now has two stamps. One is available year round at the
Lighthouse Gift Shop in Kewaunee. The new stamp with a different design
will be available at the lighthouse on tour dates. Check their website for
upcoming tour dates. This lighthouse was recently added to the National
Register of Historic Places.
Sentinel Island Lighthouse, Alaska
In 2004 ownership of this lighthouse was transferred to the
Gastineau Channel Historical Society under the National Historic
Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. They have been working to
restore the current Art Deco style structure completed in 1935
(replacing the original lighthouse built in 1902). The stamp will be
available at the lighthouse from May to October.
Found Stamps
Angel Island, California
We reported last year that the 3 stamps for Angel Island, California, had gone missing. They
have been found and now all 3 (Point Blunt, Point Knox & Point Stuart) are once again
available at the Dock Conservancy Store on the island.
Inland Lighthouses
The Passport stamp program currently has a number of participating locations on inland lakes
or waterways (other than the Great Lakes). Some examples include the three lights on Oneida
Lake (NY), Ladies Delight (ME) and the Louisville Life Saving Station (KY). We often get
inquiries from collectors asking if we can add an inland light. Some of the criteria we use when
considering adding a stamp are (a) it must be an active aid to navigation for at least a part of
the year with preference given to those with historical significance; (b) an organization
associated with the light must be willing to pay for the stamp and make it available at or very
near the light on a regular basis; (c) The stamp cannot be only available by mail; (d) revenue
generated from donations must be earmarked to help maintain the light. Every location is a bit
different and exceptions can be made. Our decision to add a stamp is considered by a group
of individuals with a connection to and familiarity with the program.
