Joint Scholarship Programme for PhD study 2023-24

Please note this is the proposed closing date for applications to The University of
Manchester and may be subject to change, if the China Scholarship Council make
any changes to their application deadline, to be completed once an academic offer
has been confirmed by The University of Manchester.

advertised here.
The University of Manchester is pleased to continue the formal partnership with the
China Scholarship Council to develop high calibre research collaborations between
UK and Chinese universities and research institutions, now with more funding
available to students. We have 52 Joint Scholarships available, across the University.
Up to 52 scholarships will be supported per academic year, as follows for each Faculty.
Up to 40 PhD tuition-fee waivers for subjects within the Faculty of Science and
Engineering
6 PhD tuition-fee waivers for subjects within the Faculty of Humanities
6 PhD tuition-fee waivers for subjects within the Faculty of Biology Medicine and
Health
Benefits
For successful applicants, The University of Manchester will cover their full tuition fees
for the period of the relevant programme as outlined in the offer letter (usually three
years). CSC will provide living allowances as prescribed from time to time by the
Chinese Government, and will cover the round-trip international airfare for students
from China to the United Kingdom, visa and passport application fees.
The funding for each awardee will be up to 48 months [Standard offer is normally 3
years 36 months, but if the institution makes it clear in the offer that a student
requires 3+1 year to finish their study, CSC can offer 48 months allowances]
Up to 52 scholarships will be supported per academic year, as per the breakdown for
each Faculty

Please note:
The successful applicants will be responsible for arranging their Visa’s in to the Country and
The University of Manchester will not be responsible or liable in any way for any successful
applicant’s failure to obtain a visa or other requisite paperwork for entry and study in
Manchester.
Eligibility criteria
To be considered for the joint scholarship programme, you must be a citizen and permanent
resident of the People's Republic of China at the time of application. Overseas Chinese
students may be eligible for application subject to CSC policy at the time (CSC publicises the
policy by early November, each year).
You must also:
Return to China upon completion of your studies and/or research;
Hold an Upper Second class UK honours undergraduate degree (or international
equivalent) from a leading Chinese university;
Hold an unconditional offer letter from The University of Manchester; They must
therefore fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by UoM, including a high
level of English language proficiency, as outlined on the University’s website:

Ideally hold a Master's-level qualification at merit or distinction (or international
equivalent);
Recommended: A track record of engaging with research, which may include
contributions to publications/articles, promoting your research to a wider audience,
prizes for research or project work;
Candidates should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC: CSC's selection criteria.
Application and selection process
(1) Candidates should apply directly for admission to The University of Manchester by
the stated deadline. Candidates should specify in their application that they wish to
apply for The University of Manchester - CSC joint scholarship scheme.
(2) The University of Manchester will evaluate the candidates, upon receiving
applications and rank them in priority order. The University of Manchester will
provide CSC and each qualified candidate with a copy of the offer letter.

(3) After receiving the academic offer from The University of Manchester, candidates
must then apply to CSC by completing an application for funding and employer
reference (Application form will be online at: 报指南 -欢迎访问国家留学网!
(csc.edu.cn) by the set deadline confirmed by CSC, between 10-31 March 2023.

(4) CSC will evaluate the candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities, and
provide The University of Manchester with a final list of scholarship recipients and
inform the successful candidates.

Application checklist:
Make a note of the application deadline, if there is one. We generally advise you to
apply as early as possible.
Choose and make contact with your potential supervisor
Make sure you have evidence of prior academic qualifications to hand these will
be certificates or transcripts to show that you meet, or expect to meet the entry
requirements.
Provide evidence of English language ability, if English is not your first language.
Please note that some English language test results are only valid for two years.
Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of your
programme.
Obtain two references download our referee report form (PDF document, 50 KB)
Prepare a research proposal/piece of academic writing, if required. This will be
specified on the relevant academic School website.
Make a copy of your passport, if you will need a visa to study in the UK.

CSC and UoM will support the following areas of study subject to the number of
scholarships outlined with priority:
Up to 40 PhD tuition-fee waivers available for the Faculty of Science and
Engineering, comprising programmes within the Departments of:
Chemistry; Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science; Computer Science; Earth,
Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences; Electrical and Electronic Engineering;
Materials; Mathematics; Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering; Physics and
Astronomy.
6 PhD tuition-fee waivers available for the Faculty of Humanities comprising
programmes within the Schools of:
Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS); Social Sciences; Environment,
Education and Development and Arts Languages and Cultures.
6 PhD tuition-fee waivers for subjects within the Faculty of Biology Medicine and
Health, comprising programmes within the Schools of:
Biological Sciences, Health Sciences and Medical Sciences.
Please note:
Candidates should be intending to pursue study/research in one of the priority
academic areas identified by The University of Manchester and CSC. However,
applicants to other study/research areas will also be considered subject to the
availability of relevant programmes of study at The University of Manchester.
