Eligibility Check
Driver’s License Renewal
You can renew your license up to six months
before it is set to expire. A renewed license is
valid for five years and will expire on your
birthday on the fifth year.
Before you can renew your license, you must
meet certain eligibility requirements based on
your application method.
Online
To renew your license online, you must meet
the following requirements:
Be a U.S. citizen and Utah resident.
Maintain the name currently on your license.
Have a license renewal notice that indicates
you are eligible for an online renewal and
provides a personal identification number
(PIN).

Have already verified your identity with the
Driver’s License Division (DLD) after
January 1, 2010.
Do not need to take any exams, such as a
vision or written exam.
In Person
You may be required to renew in person at a
DLD office if you:
Do not have an online renewal option on
your renewal notice.
Need to update your name.
Are required to complete a written exam.
Need to take a vision exam in person.
Have a license that is suspended, revoked
or cancelled.
Need to take a new photo.

What You Need
Your driver’s license number
Your renewal notice with PIN number
Your Social Security Number (SSN)
A printer
A vision exam form completed by a licensed
eye doctor, if you are 65 years of age or
older
A valid credit card for the $32 renewal fee
($17 if you are 65 years of age or older)
Steps to Take
1. Log in to the online driver’s license system
using your last name, driver’s license
number, date your license was issued and
PIN.
2. Verify all identifying information.

3. Provide payment for the renewal fee.
4. Click on the option to print your temporary
driver license.
5. Keep this temporary license with you,
along with your current license.
6. Submit your vision exam within seven
business days if you are 64-and-a-half
years of age or older by fax to 801-957-
8698 or by mail to:

7. Receive your new license by mail in six to
eight weeks.
8. Destroy your current license.

A completed Utah Driver’s License
Application
Your current Utah driver’s license
Your driver’s license renewal notice
Two proofs of Utah residency, if you do not
have your current driver’s license or your
address has changed
Name change documents, if your name
needs to be updated
Identification documents, if needed
Cash, check, money order or credit card to
pay the $32 renewal fee ($17 if you are 65
years of age or older)

Steps to Take
1. Fill out the driver’s license application.
2. Set up an appointment online with a Utah
driver’s license office, or visit the office
without an appointment.
3. Provide the application, your current
driver’s license, renewal notice and other
identification and residency
documentation, as needed.
4. Provide your thumbprint to a DMV
representative, if required.
5. Have your photo taken.
6. Complete a vision exam if you are 64-and-
a-half years of age or older.
7. Pass a 25-question written knowledge
exam (open book) if one of the following
applies to you:
You have been issued at least four
citations in the past five years.

Your license was revoked or suspended.
Your license has been expired for at
least six months.
8. Pay the renewal fee.
9. Receive a temporary license.
10. Receive your renewed license by mail in
eight to 10 weeks.
