Programs of study
EPCC offers its students a wide range of
classes and academic degree plans meant to
prepare them for the job market, or to transfer to
a four-year university. Go to epcc.edu/academics/
catalog/programs-of-study for more.
AA Associate of Arts. This degree prepares a
student to transfer to a Texas public university as a
junior majoring in liberal or ne arts.
AS Associate of Science. This prepares a
student to transfer to a Texas public university as a
junior majoring in science, technology, engineering,
or math.
AAS Associate of Applied Science. This aids
a student in employment or career advancement.
Although the AAS may not always transfer to four-
year colleges, EPCC has agreements with its part-
ners that help with transfers. Contact each school
to check if your credits apply.
AAT Associate of Arts in Teaching. This
degree prepares a student to transfer to a Texas
public university as a junior seeking a bachelor’s
degree and initial Texas teacher certication.
C1 Level 1 Certicate. This certicate ranges
from 15 to 42 credit hours and can be nished in
under a year. TSIA and TSIA2 requirements do not
need to be met. Some programs may test and help
a student as long as this does not keep the student
from enrolling.
C2 Level 2 Certicate. This program ranges
from 30 to 51 hours. A student must meet eligibility
requirements before entry into the program, and
will have to meet TSIA / TSIA2 requirements.
ESC / C3 Enhanced Skills Certicate. This
companion to an AAS degree ranges from 6 to 12
credit hours. Only a few programs offer it. It adds
extra, advanced skills to the degree, and is award-
ed at the same time as the AAS. For more on this,
see a counselor or an academic advisor, or check
the degree plans in the online Student Catalog.
ATC / C4 Advanced Technical Certicate.
This lasts from 16 to 45 credit hours, requires an
associate or bachelor’s degree, and must be in the
same program as the degree. Only a few programs
offer it. For more on this, see a counselor or an
academic advisor, or check the degree plans in the
Student Catalog online.

Whether you’re a new, continuing, or
transfer student, El Paso Community
College offers alternatives to traditional
learning that t every student’s educa-
tional needs and schedule. Our learning
options appear below.
Distance learning. These options t your needs
with online, hybrid, and synchronous classes. See if
online classes are right for you by taking our online
learning assessment. The SmarterMeasure tool
shows which distance learning environment is a
good t. Go to epcc.edu/services/distancelearning-
supportservices to learn more.
The types of distance learning classes
the College offers are
Online The class is taught
completely online.
Hybrid The class meets both
on campus and online.
Synchronous The class meets online at a
specic time in the schedule.
Credit by examination. Students can take a
prociency exam that tests their knowledge of an
EPCC specialized course. Before taking any credit
test, students should always meet with an advisor
or counselor to ensure the test will support their
degree plan. Visit epcc.edu/services/testingser-
vices/instructor-testing-services to explore your
credit by exam options.
Traditional classes. The College offers 1 the
AA Associate of Arts degree, 2 the AAT Associate
of Arts in Teaching, and 3 the AS Associate of
Science degree, for students who plan to transfer
to a four-year or upper-level college or university.
For students seeking to obtain technical skills, the
AAS Associate of Applied Science degree may be
the best option.
Many of our technical programs also offer
Certicates of Completion, allowing you to show
mastery of advanced skills in the technical eld.
Note. Be sure to check with the transfer institution
to make sure your courses transfer.
Cleo, the Credit for Learning by Experience
Option. Enrolled students who have at least
ve years of post-high school experience, in a
non-classroom, non-academic setting, can receive
college credits on the basis of their experience
and training. You must be enrolled in the College
and be able to show you’ve achieved all learning
outcomes for a course or courses in a degree plan.
Check with the Cleo program at the Curriculum and
Instructional Development ofce to learn how to
get college credit for prior experience. Go to epcc.
edu/admissions/cleo to learn more.

Continuing Education Certicate
Programs. EPCC offers Continuing Education
and Workforce Education certicate programs,
which range from 360 to 779 contact hours, and
include required and recommended prerequisites
or corequisites. These programs earn an external
credential such as a license, certication, or regis-
tration, and are usually taken in sequence to meet
occupational qualication standards. The students
that complete these programs may take part in the
graduation ceremony.
EPCC’s Continuing Education Certicate
Programs are
1 Basic Peace Ofcer
2 Massage Therapy
3 Nail Technology
OER, the Open Educational Resources Degree
Initiative. EPCC is one of 38 community colleges
in 13 states involved in the OER initiative, which
works to boost college access and completion,
especially for nancially disadvantaged students.
It strives to remove the nancial roadblocks that
derail a student’s progress, and spur changes in
course design, teaching and learning to help stu-
dents complete their degrees and certicates.
The initiative helps faculty redesign courses and
degree programs by replacing textbooks with
open-license educational content - - including
courses and their materials, books, streaming vid-
eos, modules, tests, software and techniques - - in
an extensive effort that widens access to learning.
Apply to EPCC
First time EPCC students that have not
attended for longer than a fall and spring
semester need to reapply for admission.
Go to applytexas.org to apply. Once the
application is accepted you’ll be emailed
further instructions.
Specialized admission to health programs.
Some health career and nursing programs have a
competitive two-part ranking process.
1 Students must apply for admission to
the desired health program and meet
the established criteria, and
2 Those who meet all general
and program-specic requirements
will be competitively ranked. Go to
epcc.edu/admissions/health-programs
to learn more.
International students. EPCC helps students
stay in compliance with Department of Homeland
Security requirements, and also helps them with
the application process while attending EPCC. Visit
epcc.edu/admissions/international-students for
more on admission requirements.
Military and veteran students. We welcome
you and thank you for your service. Current and for-
mer service members are encouraged to visit epcc.
edu/services/military/veterans-affairs to see which
educational benets best t their situation.
Additional admission
requirements
Submit ofcial transcripts. New students must
submit their high school or college transcript or
GED to the College. To make them ofcial, the for-
mer school - - instead of the student - - must send
them directly to the Admissions and Registration
department. Go to epcc.edu/admissions/tran-
scripts for more information,
12
Bacterial meningitis vaccine. To attend EPCC,
the state of Texas requires students under the
age of 22 to show proof of a bacterial meningitis
vaccination or booster shot in the last ve years, at
least 10 days before the rst class day. Students
may opt out of this with an ofcial meningococcal
vaccination exception form. Visit epcc.edu/admis-
sions/immunization-law to nd the exemption form
and more vaccine information.
Fafsa : the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid. Fill out the application online.
Since you’ll need Fafsa for nearly all nancial aid
programs, most of EPCC’s nancial aid ofces will
help you ll out this very important application.
Note. Every ofce will require a social security
number to apply to Fafsa.
Go to studentaid.gov/fafsa to apply. When you do,
use the EPCC school code, 010387. Visit epcc.
edu/admissions/nancialaid/scholarships for a
list of available EPCC scholarships, and go to epcc.
edu/contact/live for extra help from a nancial aid
representative.
Assessment test. First-time college students
must take a course placement test. This tests your
readiness for college, and helps put you in the cor-
rect reading, writing, and math courses. If the test
puts you in developmental courses, you must meet
with an academic counselor or advisor to register
for class. Go to epcc.edu/services/testingservices
for more on this.
NSO : New student orientation. Once done
with admission and placement, you should attend
orientation. This is your chance to get a good start
and get familiar with all the programs and services
of the College. Log on to epcc.edu/admissions/ori-
entation for NSO dates.
Academic advising. Students should see a
counselor or advisor for help with choosing a
program of study, understanding a degree plan, se-
lecting courses, and more. Visit epcc.edu/services/
counseling for an advising appointment.

General policies
Academic Suspension. If you’re on Academic
Probation and don’t maintain a minimum 2.0 gpa,
you’ll be placed on Academic Suspension - - and
you must meet with a counselor or an advisor
before you enroll.
The Campus Carry law. Texas Senate Bill 11
became law in 2015, and allows a person to carry
a concealed, licensed handgun onto the campuses
of higher education institutions in Texas.
In response, after the report of its Campus Con-
cealed-Carry task force, the EPCC Board of Trust-
ees established Gun Free Zones in May 2017.
Since August 2017, concealed-carry license hold-
ers cannot carry handguns in EPCC rooms that are
designated as Gun Free Zones.
Go to epcc.edu/services/police/campus-carry to
learn more.
Credit hour data at THECB. When you register,
you allow the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board to give EPCC your credit hour data from oth-
er institutions. If you want this withheld, you must
make a request in writing at the Registrar’s ofce.
Credit hour limits and the 30-hour rule. If
you’re getting your bachelor’s degree and want to
go to a four-year Texas college or university, there is
a limit to how many hours the state will fund.
The 30-hour rule took effect in fall 2005. Texas lets
you take up to 30 credit hours above your degree
requirements, but will not fund any more than that
- - and your tuition may go up.
Since some courses are exempt, the College will
notify you about these. The exemptions include
credit hours earned through testing, as well as
remedial, developmental, workforce education, and
technical courses.
18
Grades. To comply with state guidelines, nal
grades are posted online at the end of each term.
Graduation. To graduate from EPCC, you don’t
have to ll out an application. The registrar will let
you know you’re eligible to graduate in the semes-
ter that you become eligible. If you weren’t notied
but think you’re eligible, run an audit in Degree
Works, and then meet with your counselor to verify
your records.
High school credit for college. Certain pro-
grams and majors at EPCC can give you credit for
occupational or technical courses you took in high
school. Check with a counselor or advisor about
how to get these credits.
Scholastic standards. If you register before
a semester ends, and are placed on academic
suspension for that semester, the College will drop
your courses and refund your tuition and fees. See
a counselor or advisor about this, and nd more in
the online Student Catalog under Scholastic Stan-
dards and Academic Standing.
Denitions and
explanations
Auditing classes. To audit a class means to take
it without earning any credit. You need a dean’s
approval to do this.
Here are a few things about auditing. 1 Audits
aren’t covered by nancial aid. 2 Audits don’t get
counted when calculating full or part time enroll-
ment status. 3 You don’t get credit for an audit.
4 You can’t audit a clinical course, due to liability
insurance requirements. 5 Changing a course to
an audit, or changing it back, must happen before
the census date in the Academic Calendar.
Course corequisites. A corequisite is a certain
class you must take with another in the same
semester, and can include courses or combined
lecture-labs of the same course. Corequisite infor-
mation appears in the online Student Catalog.
Make sure you take the required corequisites. If
you don’t, you’ll be dropped from the courses that
needed them, and will lose your refund.
Course prerequisites. A prerequisite is a class
you must pass before you take another. Prerequi-
site information appears in the Course Descriptions
section of the online Student Catalog.
Make sure you take the required prerequisites. If
you don’t, you’ll be dropped from the courses that
needed them, and will lose your refund.
Course overloads. An overload is 19 or more
credit hours in a fall or spring semester, or 13 or
more credit hours in a summer session.
To register for an overload, you need a
counselor’s approval and a
3.0 gpa grade point average in
your last full-time semester.
You must turn in your lled petition form in person
to the Admissions and Registration ofce on any of
the College’s campuses.
Student responsibility. You must meet course
prerequisites and corequisites. If you get into a
course without meeting its requirements, and don’t
drop it before the rst day of class, the College may
drop you from that course without a refund.
You are also responsibile for dropping from courses
that you will not be attending.
