Summitt House System:
Summitt Houses were created for all students and staff to feel a sense of connection,
collaboration and care.
CONNECTION: At Summitt Elementary we have five houses. All students in grades Pre-K
through 5th grade, are vertically assigned to a house at the beginning of the school year.
Each school year begins with students learning the qualities and characteristics of each
house’s trait which then leads to a school wide house reveal.
COLLABORATION: Each Tuesday students participate in a House Meeting with their fellow
house members. Students get to collaborate by participating in various activities and
energizers. Students recite their motto and build connections during this time. Your child
is encouraged to wear their house color on Tuesdays.
CARING: A house system helps to build a caring, supportive environment. Each student will
be a valued member of a smaller group within the whole school. The purpose is to create
an enjoyable atmosphere in which deep learning and effective teaching can flourish a
school with rigor and relevance.
Summitt Houses:
The House of Kindness (red, heart)
The House of Courageous (gold, lion)
The House of Collaboration (blue, wolf)
The House of Innovation (purple, racoon)

If your child rides the bus, Austin ISD has an app, WheresTheBus, which will let you know
where your child’s bus is located. It’s available for download on your phone or tablet.

Bicycle Safety and Security Bicycles are to be chained at the bike rack. Bikes should be
walked when on the sidewalk. No bicycles will be allowed in the building. Helmets should
be worn when riding bikes. Skateboards, scooters, sneakers with wheels or roller blades
should not be brought to school.
Traffic Safety General safety rules should be observed by students and parents when
loading and unloading children from vehicles. Please encourage your child(ren) to cross the
street at the cross-walks for safety reasons. Children should not exit from the driver’s side
door because of the possibility of injury. Do not park in the fire zones or along the curb in
the front driveway of the school. The right lane along the curb is for drop-off only. The left
lane is for moving traffic. Pull forward as far as possible and then drop off your child at the
curb.

level to a meaningful regime of tness-building skills that will last a lifetime. Delivered on
campus and after school with the assistance of interns from The University of Texas

Social Emotional Learning
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process for helping children and adults develop
fundamental skills for life effectiveness. SEL teaches the skills we all need to handle
ourselves, our relationships, and our work effectively and ethically. These skills include:
recognizing and managing our emotions,
developing caring and concern for others,
establishing positive relationships,
making responsible decisions, and
handling challenging situations constructively and ethically.
Our campus has an assigned SEL (counselors) specialist who supports implementation on
campus by providing professional development, observing lessons and giving feedback on
explicit instruction, and integration of SEL skills and concepts into academic instruction.
Specialists work closely with campus administration and facilitators to develop SEL goals
and action plans with the steering committee.
Special Areas
Art Art instruction is provided by a specialist in grades K-5. Student artwork is displayed on
campus and in the community.
Music Music instruction is provided by a specialist in grades Kindergarten through 5th
grade. Students in 3rd through 5th grade participate in an annual city-wide Music Memory
Contest. 4th and 5th graders can try out for choir and participate in the Recorder Festival
held each year. Students should wear shoes that will stay on their feet during movement
activities.
Physical Education (PE) PE class concentrates on 2 skill units and 2 health units every
9-week session. We also have many fun wellness events planned throughout the school
year including Marathon Kids, Jingle Bell Jog, 5th Grade Volleyball Playday, CATCH Night
and Olympic Field Day! Austin ISD PE and Health programs aim to inspire students to make
healthy decisions, develop social skills and pursue lifelong physical tness.

Tết Vietnamese New Year, Vietnamese Lunar New Year or Tet Holiday, is the most
important celebration in Vietnamese culture. To celebrate this holiday, the Summitt
Vietnamese Dual Language Program performs a day and evening show. All classes in the
program participate (Pre-K to 5th Grade). In addition to class performances, the Lion

UIL (University Interscholastic League) A+ Academics Tournament
UIL A+ Academics is an academic competition designed to promote enrichment and a
healthy competitive spirit. More than half a million students participate in UIL academic
competitions each year in Texas.
In order to begin preparing for the UIL competition, teachers and students in grades 2-5
will build in some enrichment time to practice UIL skills during class. From there, students
wishing to continue with the competition will participate in a small run off competition in
early December to select the students who will compete at the actual event. We may only
send a set number of students to participate in each event, but we want to ensure everyone
has the opportunity to try out if they would like. In the spring semester, we will be looking
for parent volunteers to help us coach our competitors.
Please look for more information to come home if your child is selected to participate.

Gifted and Talented
Each year parents and teachers are invited to nominate students who exhibit exceptional
abilities in math, science, language arts, and/or social studies to be screened for the Gifted
and Talented Program (GT). The nomination period, or window, is usually 2-3 weeks long at
the beginning of each semester, but precedes a much longer testing window of 6 8 weeks.
We test students in grades 3-5 in the Fall Semester and students in grades K-2 in the Spring
Semester. This allows older students to test before the mandated testing season begins in
the spring, and younger students to have an opportunity to adjust to the new school year
before the students participate in the lengthy GT Screening Process. The GT Screening
Process does include online testing, which is timed for 3rd-5th, and the completion of a
common assessment done at school.
Parents are encouraged to talk with their child’s teacher about possible GT testing,
although that is not required. Parents must then complete and turn in a parent survey.
These can be found online or in the main office.

Summitt-Koblenz Student Exchange
Are you interested in joining us on the next trip to Koblenz, Germany? Summitt 4th and 5th

like to attend write essays about why they want to participate in the program, and a
committee chooses the participants. Parents must also be committed because there is
fundraising activities, including the Teacher Talent Show, Movie Nights, and Holiday
Bazaar, along with regular meetings for students and parents to prepare for the trip.
Visits to Germany are every other summer and in the alternating spring, children and
families from Koblenz visit Summitt and Austin. If you would like more information, please
contact one of Koblenz committee members: Heidi Meurer or Heather Brannies.
