ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA HOMELESS YOUTH PROJECT
The California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) is a multi-year research and policy initiative of the California Research
Bureau and the California State Library. The CHYP highlights issues and solutions for youth ages 12 to 24 who are
living on the edge of homelessness or are currently homeless in California. In particular, the CHYP engages these
youth directly in research and policy discussions, giving voice to their experiences and recommendations as well as
those of researchers, practitioners and policy experts. The CHYP is supported by funding from The California Wellness
Foundation and the Walter S. Johnson Foundation.

Food Resources at the California
Community Colleges
The California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) compiled lists of basic needs resources in order to make these resources
more accessible to undergraduate students. The 50 California Community College campuses, 23 California State
University campuses, and 9 University of California campuses included in these lists are the same campuses examined
in a CHYP report, Measuring Our Success: Campus Supports for College Students Experiencing Food & Housing
Insecurity. Information on basic needs resources was primarily collected from campus websites. These food resources
are updated as of November 2019. Other resource lists compiled by the CHYP include emergency housing, programs
targeting students experiencing housing insecurity, programs targeting foster youth, emergency grants, and short-

Emergency Financial Resources at the
California Community Colleges
The California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) compiled lists of basic needs resources in order to make these
resources more accessible to undergraduate students. The 50 California Community College campuses, 23 California
State University campuses, and 9 University of California campuses included in these lists are the same campuses
examined in a CHYP report, Measuring Our Success: Campus Supports for College Students Experiencing Food &
Housing Insecurity. Information on basic needs resources was primarily collected from campus websites. These
nancial resources are updated as of January 2020. Other resource lists compiled by the CHYP include free groceries,
free prepared meals, on-campus CalFresh application assistance, emergency housing, programs targeting students
experiencing housing insecurity, and programs targeting foster youth.
Notably, this resource list focuses on emergency nancial resources that can be obtained outside of normal nancial
aid processes that students can use to alleviate food or housing insecurity. In addition to the resources listed below,
students experiencing a nancial emergency can request emergency funds via their nancial aid oce or request an
adjustment to their nancial aid award package to potentially access additional loans and grants. The colleges listed
below may also oer other forms of nancial aid such as emergency book loans, grants, or scholarships which provide
students with funds for the campus bookstore.
