A Message from Bishop Brendan Leahy
This Prayer Book is a treasure-trove of prayers and I hope you enjoy
discovering them. I love Pope Francis’ Five Finger prayer! It is so important
to pray. Mahatma Gandhi used to say prayer is like oxygen for the soul. We
need to pray just like we need to breathe!
This Book gives plenty of choices of prayers so enjoy them, use them and,
above all, spend time saying these prayers.

It does us good to remember
we’re not on our own. God is with
us, Mary, Our Mother in Heaven,
is with us, the saints are with us.
To pray keeps us standing even
on the days we feel we’re getting
knocked down by bad news or
difficulties.
With gratitude to Fr. Chris O'Donnell, who compiled these prayers.

Morning Prayers
The morning light is breaking, Lord, another day is her
Life’s problems must again be met, with heart and vision clear.
Strength for today I ask, dear Lord, strength only for today;
Renew my faith, my hope revive, illumine my skies of grey.
For yesterday is past, dear Lord, tomorrow I ne’er may see,
Today alone lies in my grasp, to use or lose for eternity.
Help me to lend a helping hand, to dry the falling tear,
To give to all whose lives touch mine, some comfort or good cheer.
Help me to forget myself, my longings, hopes and fears,
In service to my fellow-man, all through this vale of tears. Amen
Prayer of Abandonment - Blessed Charles de Foucauld
Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands,
without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.
Lord, Thank You for the Gift
Lord thank you for the gift of yet another day,
Full of possibilities that I must not wish away.
If I’m busy or apprehensive, feeling tired strained or stressed,
Help me to remember the many ways in which I’m blessed.
If the day is quiet and offers time and space to breathe,
May I live it lightly, laugh dance, sing and read.
Worrying about the future or trawling through the past,
May mean I miss this moment and live it far too fast.
So help me to find purpose in the work that is at hand,
Trusting in your presence and all that you have planned.
I only have this moment, I only have this day,
Don’t let me waste it Lord or wish my life away.

It’s me again, God! Remember me, God? I come every day
Just to talk with you, Lord, And to learn how to pray,
You make me feel welcome, You reach out your hand,
I need never explain For you understand.
I come to you frightened And burdened with care,
So lonely and lost And so filled with despair,
And suddenly, Lord, I’m no longer afraid,
My burden is lighter And the shadows fade.
O God what a comfort To know that you care,
And do know that when I seek you, you will always be there.
God Bless
God bless all those that I love, God bless all those that love me.
God bless all those that love those that I love,
God bless all those that love those that love me.
Prayer to Guardian Angel
O angel of God my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen
Prayer of St Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
Give us Lord - B.J. Hoff
Give us Lord, a special faith, unlimited and free,
A faith that isn't bound by what we know or what we see...
A faith that trusts the sunshine even when there is no light,
a faith that hears the morning song's soft echo in the night...
A faith that somehow rises past unhappiness or pain,
Knowing that in every loss Your goodness will remain...
A faith that finds Your steadfast love sufficient for all things,
A faith that lifts the heart above and gives the spirit wings.

Prayer of St Patrick
I arise today,
through God's strength to pilot me,
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host
to save me.
A Prayer in the Morning
It's quiet. It's early. For the next 12 hours, I'll be exposed to the day's demands.
It's now that must make a choice.
And so I choose...I choose love.
I will love God and what God loves.
I choose joy,
I choose peace.
I will live forgiven.
I choose patience — rather than complain that the wait is too long,
I'll thank God for a moment to pray.
I choose kindness — for that's how God has treated me,
I choose goodness, I choose faithfulness.
Today I'll keep my promises.
My wife will not question my love.
I choose gentleness.
If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.
I choose self-control.
I will be impassioned only by my faith and influenced only by God.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control.
When this day is done, I'll place my head on my pillow and rest.
A Prayer of St Ignatius of Loyola
Lord, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to look for any reward,
save that of knowing that I do your holy will.

Night Prayers
When Night Comes
When night comes, Lord, help me to face
The dark on my own with the help of your grace.
When night comes, Lord, help me to know
You are my strength when my spirit is low.
When night comes, Lord, help me to cope
With worries and fears; for You are my hope.
When night comes, Lord, help me keep calm,
Watch over my slumber, protect me from harm.
When night’s gone, Lord, help me give you praise,
For you are my helper, through all of my days.
Amen.
May he support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen, and the evening
comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is
done. Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace
at last. – Saint John Henry Newman
As night falls and you look for peace and sleep, forgive what needs to be forgiven
with all the love in your heart and soul, and let the day close as it began, with
thanksgiving. - Sister Stan
In the Still of Night
In the still of night I go outside,
I look up to the stars, in them I confide,
I tell them my joys, and hopes for tomorrow
When under their gaze, I forget all my sorrow,
Alone in the night, in the quiet still hour,
When one can feel God’s mysterious power,
Serenity’s comfort, I feel in the air
Surrounding me, in sacred prayer.
Lord, keep us safe this night, secure from all our fears
May angels guard us while we sleep ‘til morning light appears

Children's Prayers
Now that the day has come to an end
Now that the day has come to an end,
I thank you Lord for family and friends
For all that has happened both the good and the bad
For the life and the laughter, for the tearful and sad
Looking back on the day help me to see,
the ways in which you've walked with me
Thank you Lord for the stillness of night,
guide family and friends to morning light
For those who won't make it to greet a new day
May they go gently, angels guiding the way
For those sick or in pain or struggling to cope,
Draw close to them Lord and fill them with hope
May we sleep soundly with help from above
And awaken with gusto to be agents of love. Amen
Almighty God, in this hour of quiet I seek communion with You.
From the fret and fever of the day's business, from the world's discordant noises,
from the praise and blame of men,
from the confused thoughts and vain imaginations of my own heart,
I would now turn aside and see the quietness of Your Presence.
All day long have I toiled and striven;
but now, in stillness of heart and in the clear light of Your eternity,
I would ponder the pattern my life has been weaving.
May there fall upon me now, O God, a great sense of your power and Your glory,
so that I may see all earthly things in their true measure.
- John Baillie (1886-1960)

Each day I am thankful
for nights that turned into mornings,
friends that turned into family,
dreams that turned into reality
and likes that turned into love.
- Anon
God bless you, God bless me, and keep us safe as safe can be.
Amen.
Wide as the world (arms spread out wide)
Deep as the sea (Point down deep)
High as the sky (point up high)
Is God’s love for me (Hug yourself)
He Made and Loves All
He prays best, who loves best All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loves us,
He made and loves all.
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Pope Francis Five Fingered Prayer
Using the fingers on your hand, start with the thumb
and pray these intentions in this order:
1.) The thumb is closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest
to you. They are the persons easiest to remember. To pray for our dear ones is a
"Sweet Obligation."
2.) The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you and
heal you. They need the support and wisdom to show direction to others. Always
keep them in your prayers.
3.) The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors
and those who have authority. They need God's guidance.
4.) The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it may surprise you, it is our
weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those
plagued by problems. They need your prayers.
5.) And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all. Your pinkie
should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the
other four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in the proper
perspective, and also you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better
way.
6
Thank you for my dinner,
Thank you for my friends,
Thank you for my family,
And love that never ends.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
I give you my heart and my soul,
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, assist me in my last agony,
Jesus, Mary and Joseph may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.
Amen.
There are four corners around my bed,
there are four angels around my head,
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, bless the bed that I lay on. Amen
Watch, O Lord,
With those who wake, or watch or weep tonight,
And give your angels charge
Over those who sleep.
Tend your sick ones, O Lord Jesus Christ;
Rest your weary ones; Bless your dying ones;
Soothe your suffering ones; Pity your afflicted ones;
Shield your joyous ones; and all for your love’s sake. - St Augustine
DRAW ASIDE tonight and look up to the
heavens. You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to pray.
Think about the vastness of the universe, the way in which
God set each star and planet in its place.
Listen. Look. Marvel.
Make time for silence and solitude.
As you behold the glory of creation,
be reminded that it is this Creator
God who is journeying with you ....... What is God saying in your spirit?
7
May we who have much remember those who have little.
May we who are full remember those who are hungry.
May we who are loved remember those who are lonely.
May we who are safe remember those who are in danger.
May we who have so much learn to share.
Amen.

Prayers to Our Lady
Take My Hand
Take my hand, O Blessed Mother, hold me firmly lest I fall,
I am nervous when I am walking, and to thee I humbly call.
Guide me over every crossing, watch me when I'm on the stairs,
Let me know you are beside me, listen to my fervent prayer,
Bring me to my destination, with you safely - every day,
Help me with each undertaking as the hours they pass away.
And when evening falls upon me, and I fear to be alone,
Take my hand, O Blessed Mother, and once again please lead me home.

And when at last my hour has come which shall decide my eternal doom
Obtain that I may tranquilly breathe forth my soul
At peace with God and you. Amen
The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled
to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left
unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother;
to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayers to Our Lady
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To
thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed
fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen
The Angelus
The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace…
Behold the handmaid of the Lord:
Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Hail Mary full of grace...
And the Word was made Flesh:
And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary full of grace...
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray:
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts;
that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son,
was made known by the message of an angel,
may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection,
through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
My Rosary Beads
A little pair of Rosary Beads, as plain as plain can be,
But only God in Heaven knows how dear they are to me.
I have them always with me, at every step I take,
At evening when I slumber, at morning when I wake.
In bright and cloudy weather, in sunshine or in rain,
In happiness or sorrow, in pleasure or in pain.

Prayers for First Communion & Confirmation
Act of Spiritual Communion
(This can be prayed at any time we want to become more aware of our
communion with Christ but it is especially prayed during Mass when we cannot
receive Holy Communion)
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there,
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. - St Alphonsus Ligouri
Prayer of a Child preparing for First Penance and Holy Communion
As I prepare to celebrate Jesus’s forgiveness and love,
May I learn all about Jesus present in Holy Communion,
May I welcome him into my heart and my life,
May Jesus help me to be more like him,
May I come to know the peace of Jesus,
the light of his love and the joy of his life always and forever. Amen
Prayer of a Candidate preparing for Confirmation
Lord, as I prepare to be confirmed in the Spirit,
May the Spirit breathe through me today and always,
Giving me light and love and helping me to recognise
and strengthen the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit within myself.
Lord, help me to create space in my heart and life for the Spirit to guide me,
May I do all that I can to be open to the grace of this special day
And may the Holy Spirit move me each day to live generously and lovingly,
Displaying the fruits and gifts of the Spirit in all I say and all I do. Amen
It helps in my struggle, it cleanses me when in sin,
It’s look of gentle patience rebukes the strife within.
In days of pain and anguish the greatest help I know,
Is to hold my Rosary beads, until I calmer grow.
So when the time approaches, when I will have to die,
I hope my little Rosary Beads, will close beside me lie.
That the holy name of Jesus, may be the last I say
And kissing my sweet rosary beads my soul may pass away.

Prayers When Anxious, Worried, or Sad
Pray, Hope, and Don't Worry - St Padre Pio
Every day I need you Lord but this day especially,
I need some extra strength to face whatever is to be.
This day more than any day I need to feel you near,
To fortify my courage and to overcome my fear.
By myself, I cannot meet the challenge of the hour,
There are times when humans help, but we need a higher power
To assist us bear what must be borne, and so dear Lord, I pray,
Hold on to my trembling hand and draw near to me today. Amen
Let nothing ever disturb you,
nothing frighten you;
All things are passing, God never changes.
Patient endurance attains to all things:
Who God possesses in nothing is wanting:
Alone God suffices.
- St Teresa of Avila
In the words of St Julian of Norwich, we pray for the grace to trust that,
All shall be well, and all shall be well and
all manner of thing shall be well.
Lord, you said,
‘Come to me all you who are weary and overburdened
and I will give you rest’.
Lord, I am both weary and afraid, help me.
Give me rest
and help me to trust that you are with me
and that I have within me the courage, grace and strength
I need at this hour. Amen
Hang On
Sometimes we need to hang on to someone else’s strength,
someone else’s peace, someone else’s hope while ours is under siege. Do it.
Courage, strength, hope, faith, peace and even sanity... they all come and go.
Borrow them from some one else’s supply until your own comes back to you.
There are rich reserves of all these life necessities if we but reach out for them.
- Francis Bacon

For Situations That Seem Hopeless
Lord, it's me again, I'm sorry I always
seem to be asking for something
In the midst of this great worry and sadness, it's difficult to be hopeful
We might get overwhelmed Lord but nothing can overwhelm you
as you hold the fullness of time
Things seem desperate and it's hard to see them improve
Yet hope is only really hope when things seem hopeless
Faith is only really faith when things seem difficult
In the midst of the improbable, unlikely and even impossible
Surprise us with a miracle because we have to trust and believe
that nothing is impossible to you Lord.
Only say the word and our souls shall be healed
Pour your grace, light and love into this sorry situation
May it bring healing and resolution but if it can't bring resolution
may it bring acceptance, peace, hope and strength for the future.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Prayers for the Sick and Dying and those who
Care for Them
Prayer for the Sick
Lord, draw near to those who are sick.
May they sense your presence, light and love at this difficult time.
I place them in your hands Lord and I ask you to let the light,
warmth and comfort of your healing love flow through them. Amen
A Prayer for Healthcare Workers
Loving God, we place into your care,
all our doctors, nurses and healthcare workers.
Give them courage of heart and strength of mind and body.
Keep them safe from harm.
May they know our deep gratitude for all they are doing
to heal and help those affected by (_________).
God of all consolation may they know your protection and peace.
Bless them in their challenging work and bless their families. Amen.
13
A Prayer for the Dying
I pray that you will have the blessing of being consoled and sure about your death.
May you know in your soul there is no need to be afraid.
When your time comes may you have every blessing and strength that you need.
May there be a beautiful welcome for you in the home you are going to.
You are not going somewhere strange, merely back to the home you have never left,
May you live with compassion and transfigure everything negative within you
and about you. When you come to die may it be after a long life.
May you be tranquil among those who care for you.
May your going be sheltered and your welcome assured.
May you smile in the embrace of your Anam Cara. - John O’Donnoghue
Prayer of Commendation
Go forth dear ……upon your final journey.
Go from this world and rest in peace.
in the presence of God the Father who created you,
in the love of Jesus who died for you,
and in the peace and warmth of the Holy Spirit who shone through you.
Go in friendship with God’s saints;
carried by his holy angels and as you are reunited
and embraced by those you have loved and lost,
may you rest this day and always in the peace,
love and warmth of your eternal home.
May he support us all the day long,
till the shades lengthen, and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest,
and peace at last.
- Saint John Henry Newman
May you be tranquil among those who care for you.
May your going be sheltered and your welcome assured.
May you smile in the embrace of your Anam Cara.
- John O’Donnoghue

Reflections of Hope
Reflections of hope written during the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic
When this is over, may we never again take for granted
A handshake with a stranger, Full shelves at the store
Conversations with neighbours, a crowded theatre,
Friday night out, the taste of communion
A routine check-up, the school rush each morning
Coffee with a friend, the stadium roaring
Each deep breath, a boring Tuesday,
Life itself.
When this ends, may we find that we have become more like the people
we wanted to be, we were called to be, we hoped to be,
and may we stay that way — better for each other because of the worst.
- Laura Kelly Fanucci
And the people stayed at home,
And read books, and listened and rested, and exercised and made art,
and played games,
and learned new ways of being, and were still.
And listened more deeply.
Some meditated, some prayed, some danced.
Some met their shadows.
And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed.
And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous,
mindless, and heartless ways,
the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, the people were joined together again,
they grieved their losses, and made new choices,
and dreamed new images and created new ways to live,
and heal the earth fully, and they had been healed. - Kitty O'Meara

Lockdown - Brother Richard Hendrick, 13 March 2020
Yes there is fear, Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying. Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death. But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary.
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are. To how little control we really have.
To what really matters. To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear. But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation. But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying. But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness. But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death. But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now. Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.
