Beforeyoustartcreatingposters,youneedtocreateapostertemplate.Conferencesandresearchseminarswill
usuallygiveaspecificationofthesizeandorientationofthepostertobesubmitted.Themostcommon sizeofposter
isA0.
ClickBlankPageSizes
Youwillseeascreen

Adialogboxwillappear:
Enter”A0PosterPortrait”inthenamebox.
Enter“84.1cm”forthewidthand“118.9cm”fortheheight,
Enter”0.5cm”ineachoftheboxesundermarginguides(left,right,top,bottom)
Thiswillsetthepagesizetothatof
anA0landscapeposterwitha5mmmargin.Ifyouwishyourpostertobe

Layoutguidesgiveyoutheoptiontodividetheposterupintosectionstohelpyouplaceyourvariouselements.
ToturntheLayoutGuideson:

Replicatethesettingsasshownintheimagebelow:
Inthisexamplethepageisdividedintoninesectionsina3x3grid.Eachsectionhasa5mmmarginorpadding,and3

highlighttheusageofsuchalayout.TheLayoutguidesarerepresentedbydottedblue

Rulerguidesareanotherwayonaligningourelementseitherhorizontallyorvertically.

Acolumnofoptionswillappearontheleft,this iscalledtheBackgroundTaskPane.
Youcanselectabackgroundfromanyoftheoptionspresented,oryoucanchooseto
createonefromassociateddialogboxes.

Applyassolidcolour
ClickontheMoreColorslinkintheBackgroundTaskpanetobringupthecolourgamutdialogbox.
Selectabasecolourfromthegraphicinthisdialogboxandpressok.AllthecoloursintheFormat
BackgroundsTaskPaneon
theleftwillchangetoreflectthenewcolour.
Choosethesquarewiththeonesolidcolourfromthispaneltoapplythefilltothebackground.
Applyagradient
YoucanchoosefromoneofthemanygradientsavailablefromtheFormatBackgroundtaskpaneoryoucan
makea
customgradient.
Toselectacustomgradient:
ClicktheMorebackgroundslinkfromthetaskpane,thiswillbringuptheFillEffectsbox
ClicktheGradienttab
Therearemanydifferentgradientswhichcanbeachi evedusingdifferentcombinationsofoptionsavailableinthis
dialog.
Thesampleboxinthebottomrighthandcornerofthedial ogboxwillgiveyouanindicationtowhatyour
gradientwilllooklike.

Aswiththegradientsoptions,youcanchooseatexturefromthetaskpane.Iftherearen’tanytosuityou,thereis
theoptiontoselectyourownfromfile.

Youcanselectatexturefromthemanylisted oryoucanusetheothertexturebuttontoselectapicturefiletobase
yourowntextureon.Againthesampleboxwillgiveyouaquickpreviewofwhatthe
backgroundwilllooklike
Applyapictureasabackground
Publisherwilltileapicturesetasabackgroundpicturedependingonthephysicalsizeofthepicture,i.e.thesmaller
thepicture,thegreaterthenumberoftiles.Yousetthebackgroundpicturethiswaybythefollowingsteps:


Next,clicktheSelectPicturebutton.Abrowserdialogboxwillpopup,navigatetowhereyourpictureis
stored,clickonit,andclickOK

Themosteffectivewaytoreadtextonaposteristobreakitdownintosmallmanageablechunks.Thisisbest
achievedusingtextboxes.
Toinsertatextbox
Clickinsert
FromthedropdownmenuclickTextBox.
Thecursorwillchangetoacross,
leftclicktoplacethecursoronthePublisherworkspace.
Clickinsidetheboxtoenteryourtext.
Ifyoufindthatyoudonothaveenoughroomtodisplayallofyourtext,youwillseethefollowingsymbol
underneaththetextbox:,Inthis

Leftclickanddragthesmallcirclesonthetextboxcornerstoresizethetextbox.

InthedropdownmenuhoveroverPictureandfromthemenuselectFromFile
Thiswillopenabrowserwindowto‘pictures’.Youcanhowever,navigatetootherfoldersfromhere.
SelectthepicturefilethatyouwanttouseandclicktheInsertbu tton.
Resize
Resizethepictureusingthesmallcircularpicturesizecontrolsoneachcornerandedgeof
theboxsurroundingthe
picture.

Note:Trytoavoidresizingsmallpicturesandthumbnailstoalargesizeasthismaydistorttheimage.

MovementandRotation
Whenyoumoveyourmouseoverthemiddleofthepicture,thecursorchangestolooklikethismeansthat
youcanmoveyourpictureovertheworkspacebyleftclickanddraggingthepicture.
Youcanrotatethepicturebyclickingandholdingthegreen
controlatthetopofthepictureanddraggingaroundit.
