Mission Statement
The purpose of Scholars Academy is to serve Horry County
Schools’ most academically capable students at an accelerated
rate and level commensurate with their abilities. HCS Scholars
Academy is located on the campus of Coastal Carolina
University (CCU).
Academic Opportunities
Scholars Academy offers 19 Advanced Placement (AP) courses
as well as dual-enrollment courses with Coastal Carolina Univer-
sity (CCU) beginning in the second semester of the ninth grade.
Students have the opportunity to explore elds of study under the
guidance of HCS and CCU and will accumulate approximately two
years of college credits with successful completion of AP exams
and CCU courses. HCS Scholars Academy is a College Board
recognized AP Capstone school. Scholars Academy students
have the opportunity to enroll in STEAM (science, technology,
engineering, arts, and math) courses through a combination of
AP classes and dual-enrollment through CCU. Scholars Academy
students also have been afforded opportunities to participate
in research activities alongside CCU professors. The Scholars’
advantage includes increased access to teachers during the
school day with our Scholars Station and spaces available for
peer support and collaborative work.
Entrance Requirements
Algebra 1 and English 1 are required. Geometry is highly recom-
mended. Students must apply online.
ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS & RECOGNITIONS
The Class of 2022 had seventeen National Merit Scholars. The
Class of 2023 has sixteen National Merit Semi-Finalists. In

2022, ninth grade and tenth grade
classes completed EOC exams in Biology (100% passing rate)
and English 2 (100% passing rate), and they successfully completed
over 500 dual-enrollment credit hours at Coastal Carolina University
with an average college GPA of 3.71. The average SAT score for
the Class of 2022 was 1430, and the average ACT score was 31.
Scholars Academy had a 98% passage rate for all Advanced Placement
tests given in 2022. Students at Scholars Academy completed over
5,500 hours of community service hours during the 2021-2022
school year. The Class of 2022 was offered $16.7 million dollars
in scholarships.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Beginning with the Class of 2024, students enrolled at Scholars
Academy will graduate from Scholars Academy High School.
Scholars Academy is a non-ranking high school, and students
must score a 1400 on the SAT or 31 on the ACT and have a
GPA of 4.0 or higher on the weighted scale to receive Palmetto
Fellows Scholarships.
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS
100% of Scholars Academy students were deemed college
& career ready, and students from the Class of 2022 gained
admission to one or more of the following schools: Massa-
chusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University,
Stanford University, University of South Carolina Honors
College, Clemson University Honors College, Georgia Tech,
Duke University, University of Washington (Seattle), University
of California (UCLA), College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina
University, West Point Military Academy, Colorado School of
Mines, University of Delaware, University of Florida, Florida
Polytechnic University, Elon University, Erskine College,

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
Scholars Academy offers 16
clubs within the program, and
students are also eligible to
participate in club activities
through their attendance-area
school. Examples of clubs
offered are Robotics, Current
Events, Mock Trial, FCA, Biology
Club, Interact Club, Ultimate
Frisbee, and National Honor
Society. Scholars also hosts a
Winter Formal, Scholars Squad
events, eld day events, etc.
FINE ARTS
Students may participate
by audition for select CCU
ensembles (Choir, Symphonic
Band) and may participate in
performing arts opportunities
at their attendance area high
schools. Visual artists may take
advanced art courses through
CCU. Orchestra students may
participate in Long Bay Youth
Symphony.
ATHLETICS
Scholars Academy has had
numerous students who have
participated in athletics and
advanced to
state-level
competitions.
