Shattered (Finding Hope in the Book of Job)
Week 4: When Will This End? Week of June 26, 2022
Job 42 (Jeff Griffin, Senior Pastor)
We’d all love to avoid challenging and painful seasons, but the reality is that devastating hardship is
a part of everyday life. To avoid letting struggles overwhelm us, we can look to God’s survival
principles. This week, we take a closer look at the end of Job’s journey.
Kicking Off:
If a movie were made about your life, what genre would it be, and which actor would play you?
Discussion:
1. Read Job 42:10. How do you feel about God restoring Job at the end of this story — is it more comforting
or frustrating for you, or a little bit of both?
“After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as
he had before.” (NIV)
2. Next, read Job 42:5. Try to think of a time where God made Himself more visible and strengthened your
faith after going through a tough season. If you’re comfortable, share a synopsis of that story with your
group.
“I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes.” (NLT)
3. Read Joel 2:25a. What does this passage reveal about the heart of God? What are some of the multi-
year ‘locusts’ you have seen in your life or your family’s that you would like to see God restore?
“I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten.” (NIV)
4. Read Matthew 19:28-29. How might these verses impact the way you view Heaven? Or affect the way
you live your life today?
Jesus said to them, Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his
glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes
of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or
children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.’”
5. Take a look at James 5:11. In what ways can a verse like this give you hope when you’re going through a
challenging season in life?
“We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a
man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of
tenderness and mercy.” (NLT)
Wrapping Up:
Sometimes trusting that God will restore good things can be really difficult. How can your group encourage
one another to keep believing in God’s goodness as you navigate major issues with your faith, health,
relationships, finances, or family? Pray that you can support and strengthen one another in tangible ways.
